Submissions are being accepted now through Apr. 4, 2014, and residents all across the nation can enter. Click here to submit a name that is no longer than 50 characters long. Currently, the company has a fleet of three blimps, which are dubbed:
- Spirit of Innovation (based in Florida)
- Spirit of America (based in California)
- Spirit of Goodyear (based in Ohio)
The new and currently unnamed blimp will soon join the group, and it's an incredibly impressive addition. Surprisingly, all previous Goodyear blimps used a manual flight system that dates back to 1925, while the new ship integrates progressive flight control systems and avionics. It can also travel up to 73 mph, which is a significant boost from the current 50 mph. Additionally, it's 50-feet longer than its brethren and uses cutting-edge computer-regulated controls never before seen in a Goodyear blimp.
Many blimps, but not all, were named after yachts because Goodyear's CEO from 1930-58 thought of them as yachts in the sky. If the names above didn't get you thinking, here are some former titles to help start your brainstorm: Puritan, Resolute, Vigilant, Columbia, America, Reliance, Stars & Stripes, Pilgrim and Neponset.
