Subaru's signature horizontally opposed boxer engine - offered on all models from the Outback to the WRX - celebrates its 50th anniversary. When it was first debuted in 1966, Subaru's boxer engine was offered on the 1000 sedan and it produced 54 horsepower; far less than today, but pretty respectable for that era.

Since then, millions of boxer engines have been developed and the engine itself has grown more and more innovative. Subaru continues to use the boxer engine design today because it offers several innate benefits, such as having a lower center of gravity than an inline or V engine. This promotes greater stability, which means less vibration and engine noise.

The video below outlines the boxer engine's development over 50 years using unique visuals. Check it out now!
