There Will Be No Subaru STI for 2023

Subaru stopped developing the internal combustion engine for its WRX STI, the company's flagship performance vehicle. The complete Subaru statement leaves room for an EV.

Subaru News

Subaru is concentrating on how our future sports and performance cars should change to meet the needs of the changing market and the regulations and requirements for greenhouse gases (GHG), zero emissions vehicles (ZEV), and corporate average fuel economy as the automotive industry continues to move towards electrification (CAFE). Subaru Corporation is investigating options for the upcoming Subaru WRX STI, including electrification, as part of this effort. In the interim, the new WRX chassis won't be used to build a WRX STI with an internal combustion engine. The Subaru WRX STI and the STI brand are the pinnacle of Subaru's performance automobiles and best symbolize the company's distinctive DNA and rally heritage.

It is undoubtedly bad news for Subaru enthusiasts who had their hearts set on an STI based on the brand's updated sport compact. It also disappoints those who want a more luxurious WRX with manual transmission because the range-topping WRX GT is still only available with an automatic transmission, at least for the time being.
