What's New for the 2020 Subaru Ascent?

The Ascent became the largest Subaru vehicle when it debuted for the 2019 model year. A year into production, not much has changed; Subaru added a standard rear-seat reminder alert system and power-folding side mirrors. By this time, the Ascent is noted for its superb handling (for its size), spacious three-row seating, and a plethora of tech features.

Trims and Interior Features for 2020

The 2020 Subaru Ascent is split into base-level, Premium, Limited, and Touring trims. Seating at the base level has cloth trim, front-seat 6-way manual adjustability, and 60/40 split-folding rear seats as standard. Comfort and convenience features include tri-zone automatic climate control, 19 cupholders, Bluetooth connectivity, Subaru STARLINK infotainment integration, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for smartphone integration, a six-speaker stereo system with AM/FM radio and a single-disc CD player, a four-month trial SiriusXM Radio subscription, a USB port, Magellan navigation, and a 6.5-inch LCD touchscreen display.

At the Premium level, the Ascent has enhancements and additions such as front-seat 8-way power with heating ability, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, stain-resistant cloth seat trim, a Wi-Fi hotspot for Internet access at 4G LTE speeds, an additional USB port, hands-free text messaging, voice-activated controls, HD Radio technology, a 3.5-inch audio jack, and an 8-inch LCD touchscreen display.

If you go with the Limited trim, your Ascent will be further boosted with leather upholstery, steering-wheel and second-row heating ability, 10-way power with lumbar support and a memory system on the driver's seat, 4-way power on the front passenger seat, keyless access with push-button engine start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a garage-door opener, and dual second-row USB ports. Exclusive to the top-level Touring trim are front-seat cooling ability, third-row dual USB ports, 8-inch LCD touchscreen navigation, and a 14-speaker 792-watt Harman Kardon stereo system.

Performance From a Turbocharged Engine

The 2020 Subaru Ascent is powered by a turbocharged 2.4-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine that generates 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a continuously variable transmission, and the SUV uses a standard all-wheel drivetrain. Due to its powertrain and drivetrain configuration, the Ascent provides a fuel economy of 21/27 mpg as well as possessing a peak towing ability of 5,000 lbs.

Which Safety Technologies are Used?

Among the 2020 Subaru Ascent safety features are a rearview camera, hill descent control, electronic stability control, traction control, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, trailer stability assist, brake assist, brake override, active torque vectoring, daytime running lights, a theft-deterrent system, and six airbags. For driver assistance, the Ascent has EyeSight, a tech package that consists of adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, lane departure, and sway warning, and lane-keep assist.

Upgrade to the Premium to get blind-spot detection, lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and the Subaru Safety and Security package for functions such as roadside assistance, automatic collision notification, SOS emergency assistance, remote engine start with climate control, and monthly vehicle health monitoring. Driver assistance is further boosted on the Limited trim and higher with the addition of reverse automotive braking and high beam assist. Unique to the Touring trim is a 180-degree front-view monitor.
