A recent test comparing pedestrian detection systems once again proves Subaru’s prowess in the area of safety technology. As smart as many of today’s new driver-assist features are, it’s a bit startling to think that many of the vehicles in this test straight up failed when their pedestrian detection systems were put to the test. In fact, all but the Subaru Outback were unsuccessful when it came to stopping in time.
A German magazine called Auto Motor und Sport (AMS) conducted the exam, which included a variety of models from several segments: Outback, Mini Cooper S, Volvo V60, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Nissan Qashqai (American variant is the Nissan Rogue).

To conduct the test, a dummy was placed in the trajectory of each vehicle, then one by one each was sent speeding toward it. Sadly, every one of the vehicle models, except the Subaru Outback, pummeled the poor dummy. If you’re thinking what we’re thinking, some drivers out there are paying for technologies that don’t work as promised.
We were excited to see that the Subaru Outback’s system did indeed work. The SUV is offered with EyeSight, which includes Pre-Collision Braking, a feature that serves as both a pedestrian and obstacle detection system. When a person or object is detected, the system beeps and indicators flash on the dashboard display. If the system identifies that there’s high risk for a collision and the driver isn’t taking action, it can apply the brakes and in some cases adjust the engine output.
If you want to own an SUV designed to keep you and others around you safe, consider the Subaru Outback. Check out this post to learn more about EyeSight and how it saves lives every day.
